As said by others there is an actual game bird called a Snipe that you can hunt, but certainly not at night with a burlap bag and a flashlight. The term Snipe Hunter originated in India where the British were known for their skills hunting "Snipe (The REAL Bird)" decades ago.... ..For the most part today it's part of a joke and is right up there with "Cow Tipping"......lol

Pretty hilarious stuff, but believe it or not, I have been snipe hunting for real. There is a bird know as the Snipe, and it is hunted in some of the Midwest and Great Plains States. I went with some of my Dad's friends one time, and it was really fun and challenging. They are a shorebird of sorts, you hunt them in marshes and the like.

Yes snipe hunting has been a joke for quite some time, though there truly is snipe hunting (no joke). A snipe is a migratory bird. Here is the link to a .pdf file of the Wisconsin migratory bird regulations and you can search for the word snipe and actually learn something.

Been taken and have taken others. It's a lot of fun as long as everybody takes it as it's meant.

By the way there is a real Snipe out there. It is a samll bird that hangs out near the bay.

Snipes are actually real game birds. I've only ever heard of the prank version here on Answers.

HAHAHAHA...Snipe hunting.......Good times....

So how did you teach people to snipe hunt....We used sticks, garbage bags and a snipe call....LMAO.... Of course my (black) garbage bag had a long piece of fishing line taped to the bottom and fed through my sleeve....I always caught at least one....
