Patience. wisdom and an insatiable desire to be a better parent. Common sense helps a lot. Some of the books I read I wonder if that person ever raised a child. Connon sense if your best help. If it doen't seem right then it probably isn't.
Love them with all your heart and that the easy part. Make sure they get good information about how life works; the good and the bad, give them the opportunity to become whole people without dependency, let them stand on their own. If a swat needs to be administered to get their attention...so be it. Just don't hit in anger. Make sure that no matter what happens they know that you will still love them and you are their source for renewal.
A parent job is to let the child be able to lean without the need to do so.
You have to be trainable, adaptable and fast on your feet. My Gran told me to train my son like my dog. Patience, close watch, correct bad behavior immediately, don't hit when anything else will work but a swat on the rear is to get his attention, reward good behavior regardless of how fleeting it may be. Discipline, love, food and shelter.

The ultimate Source of advice on raising children is Jehovah God, the Originator of the family. (Ephesians 3:15) He is the only real expert. In his Word, the Bible, he provides reliable, practical instruction that really works. (Psalm 32:8; Isaiah 48:17, 18) It is up to us, though, to apply it.

"better parent"....it depends on what kind of parent you were before.
If you are asking how to be a good parent...then the answer is common sense....patience, love, the ability to know right from wrong and to instill good moral values in your children.

For me the best thing i could do to be a better parent is to accept that I am not perfect.
For my children it would be to allow them to eat sweets before lunch

Patience, being a leader and not a buddy, and willingness to learn and adjust techniques to the particular personalities of your children.
