yes, i would say that darkness is just a function of the absence of light. no light, no darkness, with light there is dark, as there can be no shadow without a light source...
but it can never be said that there is light because there is an absence of the light. only presence can be measured and quantified. darkness is merely an expression for the instance of a lack of light.

There was once this show on tv that had a theme song that went something like this:
"Demons come from every side (in the darkness is the light)
Holding me on a downward slide (in the darkness is the light)
Gettin' hot the deeper I go (in the darkness is the light)
Into the darkness down bellow
In the darkness is the light
I live my life in one straight line, the future ahead an' the past behind
Don't wanna go back to yesterday
But I don't know how long I can run this way
A tangled heart w/ tangled vines(in the darkness is the light)
Tangled up in my own lies (in the darkness is the light)
A creature there, in darkness lies (in the darkness is the light)
Why is it that he has my eyes (in the darkness is the light)
I live my life in one straight line, the future ahead an' the past behind
Now I can walk like I never knew
An' they tell me the only way out is through the air
They say the truth will set you free (in the darkness is the light)
Free to be down here on my knees (in the darkness is the light)
But just when I think I've lost my sight (in the darkness is the light)
I catch a glimpse of that beautiful light (in the darkness is the light)
In the darkness is the light
Surrender now and win the fight
This girl's walk of fire and ice
But I come out on the other side of paradise
Oh yeah paradise
My paradise is kil_ling you, is kil_ing you baby
Paradise, paradise
Oh yeah , oh yeah, oh yeah.
Paradise."
This song explains it all.
Blessed Be.

Darkness is the absence of spiritual light. John 3:19-21 shows there are many people who prefer to exist in spiritual darkness and avoid spiritual light at all costs.
They prefer to think only of their own desires and comforts. Oh they like to think they are showing off for others in the community how great a form of godly devotion they have while believing anything they want. After all, God is not going to do anything about it right? Wrong!
In every occasion in the Bible, the Creator did not stand for any two-faced worshipers. Those trying to blend false worship with worship of Him.
Today, it is a part of worship for people calling themselves Christians to accept as doctrine commands of men. (Matt. 15:9) That verse quoting Jesus proves this worship is useless. When accepting teachings not based on the Bible, even against what the Bible really says, our worship is then useless. Might as well not even try. Even worse, when hearing the right thing the Bible shows and refusing to listen, you have lost your chance for the life God gives. You make your choice for or against God's rule. Soon, there will be no more chances as it will be God's time for getting things back under His comtrol.

I believe the answer you are looking for is that light and darkness cannot co-exist, for by certain definition darkness is the absence of light, hence light (the euphemism for righteousmess, Godliness) cannot have anything to do with darkness (lawlessness, evil).
If you consider the very word sin, it is in the original Greek a word for missing the mark, later we used the Latin word for "without" (which became the Spanish word for the same). Sin is defined int he book of I John as lawlessness, being without the law of God

I think it's more like an expression like yin and yang, black or white, happy or sad, commonality or equilibrium. The light chases away the dark when it's day and the dark creeps up on the light when it's night. It shows balance can't have one without the other. Well you can but it would disrupt your balance in life/ Happiness. Learn to balance both for a healthy out come in life.

"or is "darkness and light" like fish flavored toothpaste and green printer ink (having nothing to do with each other)"
You mean like the link you posted, and your original question?
Darkness is the absence of light. So without light, we would have no concept of darkness. Darkness only exists in our minds because of light.

True darkness is not a varying degree of light it is the absence of light.
***UPDATE***
A closet that is completely sealed from the outside would be complete darkness. We do call things that are "dark" that are simply varying degrees of light. Dark is used as a comparative term to say that it is "less light" then there was at a different time or location.

I don't understand how your question is related to the Web link; however, metaphorically speaking in religion, spirituality, and philosophy, darkness symbolizes ignorance and nihilism and light symbolizes insight, knowledge, redemption, etc.
Thus, in the NT, we find Jesus being described as the light that overcomes darkness. Another example is an ancient Hindu prayer (to Rudra, a precursor of the god Siva) that goes: "lead us from the unreal to the real, from darkness to light, from death to immortality."
I think the idea is pretty clear.
This motif may relate to the "killing of God" referred to in the link you posted in the way a Zen Buddhist saying goes "If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him." Enlightenment has to do with seeing clearly and breaking down ersatz and obstructing forms of thought.

Biblically, darkness is a creation unto itself, not just the absence of light. Consider the buzz in the physics world concerning 'dark matter'.

Without light there cannot be darkness. If someone never knew any amount of light then they would not even realize it was dark, they would simply take that as reality for them.
