You can fire a rifled slug from a smooth barrel, as long as it's not back-bored. Sabot slugs are for rifled barrels or shotguns with a rifled choke tube. If you have a choked shotgun, getting a rifled choke and shooting sabot slugs would be the most accurate, short of getting a fully rifled barrel. Rifled slugs can be used with a improved cylinder choke for a minor increase in accuracy, but going much tighter than that is not recommended.
If you really need to, a sabot slug can be fired from a smooth barrel, but it's going to be very inaccurate, and sabot slugs are generally much more expensive than rifled slugs.
As always, make sure the shell is the same gauge and no longer than the shotgun is chambered for.

Yes you may with some qualifications. First the shell should be the same gauge or caliber in the case of a .410, but also it is usually recommended a rifled slug barrel, cylinder bore or slightly choked barrel and not a full choke for instance due to the constricted barrel and the high pressure rounds used today.
Sabot rounds are another popular choice if you have a rifled slug barrel and noticeably more accurate in most cases,, although the trade off is the cost. They are usually much more expensive than a rifled slug.
Good luck and good shooting!

yes, however if the shotgun has a "full" choke it is not recommended. It can either open up the choke, or ruin the barrel (or worse) on older guns. I carry a smooth barreled shotgun with a 20" barrel loaded up with slugs when ever I am setting out bear bait. I have taken black bears and deer out to 75-100 yards with them. However, with the standard bead site they tend to shoot low, and are not accurate out past 75 yards for hunting. I installed "ghost ring" sites on mine an have no problem with accuracy.

Yes, you just won't have the accuracy that you would from a slug barrel. A slug barrel is rifled for better accuracy.

Yes, one make is "The Brenake Slug". It's about an ounce of lead and has grooves cut in it to get it to spin, even in a smooth-bore firearm.

YES I prefer to use the Remington Brand Sluggers in mine. The manufacturers recommend you only shoot them in shotguns that have a cylinder choke or improved cylinder choke for accuracy & safety.*
