These events don't take place very often and when they do i am not paid for attending, so why should i incur a cost to attend? Assuming that i have a tuxedo is comparable to assuming that i have a full set of female clothing just in case i have to attend a drag contest at some point in my life. It may happen but would not happen often enough for me to warrant spending out large sums on female clothing.

If your in this business and participating in the AGM makes the wheels go round, then a tuxedo it is, rent one(not a particularly large expense) Especially if this means keeping your job.If there is no threat of loosing your job, then don't go.."no go, no tuxedo"

Because they think shows a certain standard but they all look like penguins.
Because most folks that go to AGM`s are rich pricks and money has no worth to them. But for the not so rich then hire one or turn up in what ever you have .
A suit or sports jacket and clean clothes is OK.
To stand out wear a Hawaiian shirt and shorts ,you may get thrown out but think of the look on their faces
And for the possible drag show get a girl friend that is your size and borrow hers

Basic tuxedos are fairly reasonable, about the cost of a suit. Rentals are not bad either.

maybe it is because they are considered important meeting and they expect you to dress to impress especially if there is a dinner and speeches etc
