I am in my 40s and have never had a sense of exactly what I'd like to do for a living. I don't like what I do now, but it's what I do and it pays the bills, so I do it. I know I'm not alone in feeling this way and wonder what others think about being in this situation.

Kurt,

As you can see, this is not an uncommon situation to be in. It isn't considered a failure on your part to want to change the direction of your life. And you are never too old! I started my last home business at 42 and have been in many directions before I finally found the business that I was passionate enough about to fully commit to it for good.

That is the secret to your success....finding something that you can be passionate about. Because without that passion to fuel your desire then you will become bored and lose the ambition to succeed.

If you aren't happy with the results in your life, then it is up to you to change it. Figure out what it would take to create the results that you want and be willing to take the necessary action to achieve it.

Consider that life is like a recipe. If you make a dish using a recipe and find that you don't like the results, will you just keep making the same dish with the same recipe over and over? Or will you keep changing the recipe until you create the results that you like? Life is no different. If you don't like the results, simply change your recipe!

I am significantly younger than you are, but still an adult, and I ask this question all the time. I do feel too old for this. It makes me think, "This is the same question I asked when I was 11. Am I not making any progress?" Unfortunately, the answers don't fall out of the sky for us just because we're adults. Sometimes, I think, "I should go ask a grownup" but then I realize I am the grownup!

The best solution I can think of is this: allow yourself to dream. Fantasize about what job you'd like to have, and don't limit yourself. No possibility is too wild. Write them all down as you think of them, no matter how crazy they are (some of my choices have included rock music critic and lounge singer!). As you review your list, you may find that your interests fall into a common cluster, such as music or computer technology. You may have to go back to school for your chosen interest, but don't fret, as some professions only require a community college degree/certification. Investigate the career that's of interest to you, maybe talking to some industry professionals along the way. Sooner or later, you may hit on something. Good luck!

If you aren't doing something you love than you are not asking the wrong question. FInd out what it is that you truly have a passion for, and get out there, and get it done! I am 25, and feel like my life is all about paying the bills, and doing things to stay afloat. But my dream, which I have had forever and plan on accomplishing soon is to open a youth center. Kind of goes against my sign language major, or my english major, or even my accounting major in college. But it is what I love. I also have been spending my spare time developing other loves, such as sign language (ASL), and crafts. They can all be profitable, fi done right. Good luck on your search!
YOU AREN'T TOO OLD!!!!

No I don't and neither should you. People who say that are just too gutless to admit they want something that could be hard to get. Whats the point of living if you can't live the way you want to? Whatever your goal is, even if it takes you years to figure it out, go for it.
I'm turning 30 in a couple of weeks and I'm applying for medical school next summer. Some people think I'm crazy, that I should have done it when I was 22 and that graduating at 35 is insane. I think they're really sad.
Good luck!

I think it's too late to ask since you're already grown up rather you shold be asking milestone questions like "What you want to have acheived in the next 5, 10, 15 years etc"

You're also not the only one who does not enjoy what they do but still hold on to it because it pays the bills. However instead of brooding over a job because you dont enjoy it, you can focus on other things about it that can be fun. For instance if you work in an organisations where you have nice and caring colleagues, you may choose to look at the job from the angle of the nice people you have around you instaed of the job you dont enjoy.

Thats is why it is said that when life give you lemons, you make lemonade out of it.

I am in my 40s too and feel the same way. The way I look at it is that as long as I am still learning then I am still growing. In this respect, I hope I am never grown up enough that I won't consider what I want to do later in life.

I feel the same way.. Like I have a general idea but i don't know if I could pull it off. But then again, I'm still pretty young. But I feel I should at least have an ideal of what I want to be.

I'm technically all grown up, too! But are with you....I have no clue. I have a good job that I love, on some days, but it pays my bills and gets me through life. If I was ever given the oppotunity to better myself with college, I would have no clue as to what I would want to study.

I know exactly what you mean. I am 22 years old and I have a job that I absolutly love but get paid very little for. But when I graduatate (with a boring degree of computer science) I will have to decide what I actually want to do with my life.
