What time period is believed to be when the book of Genesis was written?

As I understand it, Genesis was composed between 2500 and 3000 years ago, assumedly by Moses in what would have been the latter middle part of the Bronze age. As to if it was actually written down, or simply composed as an oral tradition is still up for scholarly debate. There are some that beleive that NONE of the old testament was actually written down until the seventh century BCE others state that it was Moses, or one of his followers that actually put the words down on parchment (most likely papyrus) befofre the end of his lifetime. Those are the two possible answers, depending on which theory you ascribe to. As to which one is right, there is sufficient evidence for both ideas to keep the debate going for many more years.

Of course if you are referring to the time period that the book is actually describing then it would cover the entirety of time from the formation of the universe until the late bronze/early iron age.

Even though it appears first in the Bible it was not the first book written. This Book was written to refute other paganistic rendition of the creation story and was to show God had order in all things. Off hand I am unsure of the time period. Good ?
