being an American to me, means standing up for what you believe in. having the right to pick and chose how to live your life w/o being told you can't do this, you can't do that. being American means being able to chose whether or not to practice a religion, or whether or not I chose to believe in God or a god. I like the fact that I can go to other states and each one is like it's own place. There is never a dull moment in America as far as I am concerned.

It would not mean much to me because some of what we promote in our society, and not only that, but the influence of our culture on others. For example, a French exchange student visited my school last year. My english teacher asked her why the French hate us, especially after bailing them out in WWI, etc. The influence of our culture over those really changed things, she said, and that life is simply not what it's used to be. (I could argue that point, because I have friends who've been to Germany and other European nations, and the lifestyle doesn't seem to compare much), but, overall, that American omnipotence is what pissed off her country the most. If I'm sitting in a room full of people, I don't think automatically that I'm the best person there and I should station my erm, personal military, on everyone else's stuff. That's now who I am. But whatever. Although some ideals are not perfect (e.g., our currency isn't worth more than the fibers that make the cloth), but I'm still fairly proud of an American way of life, because the way I live isn't the way it's typically portrayed. And nobody seems to care. And every country has it's problems.

Honestly I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad one. I count my blessings for sure, I know we are fortunate to live in a country that provides much but I think I would be just as happy if not happier with a European lifestyle. Europeans don't seem so overly concerned with work and pay, they know how to enjoy themselves and appreciate life. I think we could use a little more of that here!
