Our 10 month old large breed dog was diagnosed yesterday with bilateral hip displasia. He needs both hips replaced which could cost between $6,000-7,000. He was adopted when he was 4 months old from an animal rescue center. We would appreciate any contacts or info on how to get his surgery cost donated. I think most families cannot afford this kind of cost, but there is no other option....he must have this surgery to have a humane life. All info is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you for all your answers. We cannot euthanize because we signed a contract saying we have to give him back to the adoption center if it came to that

Til now I've considered health insurance for animals kind of silly. But your dilemma illustrates why it may sometimes be a good idea, although it's too late for your pet.

You've been given several other suggestions and options, ranging from seeking charity to earning, earning or raising the money yourself somehow, borrowing money, or putting the dog down. Not an easy decision and I have no magic answer.

That stinks about the dog. Unfortunatly, this is what happens frequently with irresponsible breeding, but that is a moot point right now. I have only heard about reduced cost spay and neuters, not a total hip replacement. I think your best bet would be to get creative and come up with some fund raising ideas or raffles. If you have a veterinary school near your home, you may be able to contact them about getting a reduced cost surgery (on the off chance...) Hopefully someone may have more information for you! Good Luck!

Sorry! There are a lot of animal health insurances out now, humane society even has one through them...but most wont cover a pre-existing condition. Since your dog was diagnosed yesterday your best bet is to ask your vet if you can have any discounts or work out a payment plan.

Or alternative treatments besides total hip replacement, there are some here: http://www.vetinfo4dogs.com/dhipsurgery.html

Good luck!

Unfortunately you won't be able to get insurance on the dog cause its a pre-existing problem. Try to get a personal loan from the bank. I would even go as far as to contacting the rescue group and ask them what they can do for you. Never hurts to ask. Mabye they will help raise funds. This is done everyday. I give you alot of credit for wanting to do this for your dog. Most people would put it to sleep or take it to the shelter and make it someone else's problem. Your devotion makes me smile. I wish you the best of luck!!

I'm very sorry to hear about what has happened to your poor pup. one of the most common things i have seen recently is called Care Credit. Basically it is a credit card that covers vet expenses and just like other cards you pay on it monthly. you do have to meet certain income and job stability requirements but if I were you i would try for it anyway. it never hurts. to apply you will need to call your vet and get the number. I would put it on here but i think it might vary state to state. good luck!
