You picked a good caliber. I shot a lot of rifles over the years, in several calibers and settled on the .270 Winchester round about 20 years ago. I've taken black bear, mule deer, elk, antelope and pigs with it and never felt under gunned. If you can find one, the Remington "mountain rifle" or the Winchester mod 70 "featherweight" are both great rifles and the lighter weight sure pays off by the end of a long days hunting. I use a mod 70 featherweight, but I did have a KDF muzzle brake installed on it, did a trigger job, free floated the barrel and fell in love with the results. It literally fires a one hole group at 100 yards. I sight it in 2 inches high at 100 yards. Then I have the same point of aim from 70 to 300 yards. My next choice would be the browning. Although it is quite a bit heavier.

I own that same rifle. Literally produced a one hole, 5 shot group at 100 yds. w/ 130 gr. federal fusion ammo straight out of the box. Since then I have given it a trigger job and left it alone. Ruger makes a good rifle but are not known for the best accuracy on paper but for hunting is a fine rifle. Browning makes a great rifle also but a bit pricey.

If that is the gun/scope out of the box model, Savage has some good ones also. I just bought the 110 in 30-06 for a back-up or spare gun. I love the accu-triger on it. It was nearly dead on right of the box. Otherwise. Ruger, Weatherby or Winchester all have good barrels. If it doesn't have a scope be sure to match it up with a good one like Leupold, Nikon or Zeiss.

If I were in the market for a bolt action rifle, I'd look real hard at Savage Arms' rifles. They are typically less expensive than Remington or even Ruger and are good quality. Remington's quality has suffered in recent years - though their ammo is still top notch.

That is an excellent rifle right there. The only other two that I would look at are the Browning A-Bolt and the Ruger M77. Whatever you choose will be an excellent choice. Don't forget about a quality scope!

I have a CDL 7 mag and love it. You may find something as good but I doubt you will find better for an off the shelf gun.

Savage because mine consistently shoots three (3)* shot groups at 100 yds you can cover with a quarter.* Mine is a 30-06.*
