i don't know if you've been following my posts or not, but i've been depressed for about 5 years and i recently got help from a psychoanalyst who prescribed me prozac.i've only been on it for 2 days now, and my symptoms have only gotten worse. i've heard that's common, so i'm not too worried. but if theres anyone else out there on prozac, do you have some feedback? i mean, does it actually work, or are there side effects, or anything? just some general first hand info would be great.

& thanks to everyone who persuaded me to get help because honestly, i never would have if it werent for the people telling me i needed it. so thanks

It does work for most people...but keep in mind everyone's brain chemistry is different. So what may work for one person might not necessarily be the best for another.
All SSRI's (which includes Prozac) are slow to act. It takes several weeks for the medication to build up in your system and begin working. Be patient and give it some time.
Also, change your expectations - you will not wake up one day and feel "great" or "no longer depressed." Over time, you will notice that you will gradually feel better (i.e. brighter mood, increased energy, more motivation).
Give it a couple of months and if you still see no change talk with your therapist about trying out another medication.

I've taken Prozac and so had my sister. It worked well for both of us. However, the problem you could be having is that many doctors recommend that you start Prozac gradually. Maybe you should have taken a half pill for a couple of days and then started a full dose.
There have been countless lawsuits where people have said that it made teens or adolescents suicidal. If this is happening then you need to talk to your doctor ASAP.
You also need to know that sometimes a pill is not enough. Therapy can be a good thing, too. Prozac and therapy may work better than just one or the other, so give that a try before you give up on it.

It can take up to 8 weeks to be effective. Patience is important.
