Sounds like your basic adolescent. Be available to help him and advise him without forcing it down his throat. Let him find his own way but let him also know how you feel. Teach him that actions have consequences without being the bearer of those consequences. Tough job? Yep.
Now how is this a religion and spirituality question again?

Give him a reason to focus. Say son, if you don't do this, this will happen. If you do this, this will and this will not happen. If he cares not about the consequence, show him what real consequence can and may someday be like.

If he is grown, let life teach him some lessons.

if he's 12, then he's just a kid and you shouldn't force him to take life so seriously.
if he's 18, then it's really none of your business.
either way, you should just get over it. he's not a criminal, right?
