it depends on your overall diet. protein, carbohydrates and fats all need to be ingested in sufficient quantities to promote muscle growth. if your body fat is below average then shoot for 30% protein, 50% carbs and 20% fats. if it is average or higher than use 40% protein, 40% carbs and 20% fats in your diet. so based on a 2,500 calorie diet it would be:
2,500 x .3 = 750
2,500 x .5 = 1250
2,500 x .2 = 500
1 gram of protein = 4 cals
1 gram of carbs = 4 cals
1 gram of fat = 9 cals
750 / 4 = 187 grams of protein daily
1250 / 4 = 312 grams of carbs daily
500 / 9 = 55 grams of fat daily

Never. Most people who live in a first world country and eat animals get two to ten times the amount of protein than their bodies need or can process. Unless you are running marathons or doing competitive body building, those drinks and shakes are pretty unnecessary. Don't waste your money. Remember, excess protein can kill your kidneys and will turn into fat.
