My 22 month old daughter cut her hand last night while playing outside. It isn't a terrible cut, but it is on her palm. It has dirt in it, but she wouldn't let us clean it out. And, to make matters worse, we didn't know that she did it until a few hours after it happened. My question is, what do we do about it? The edges have fused back together, closing in the dirt. Is this something we should let heal itself, or does it call for a doctor's visit?

I would not fret about your childs cut unless it becomes red and/or hot, or show any signs of infection. If it's going to get infected, it'll do it in the next day or so. Then you have to make your daughter let you clean it, no matter her opposition. Then place a bandaid on it with neosporin or some antibiotic ointment on it. If she fusses about a bandaid, clean the cut really well, and then put the bandaid on after she goes to bed. A little dirt hardly ever hurts. I have three boys... all have had infected cuts at one time or another and all are perfectly healthy and normal! Relax Mom, she'll be just fine! Best of luck to you!

Just hold her down and clean it out. Yes, she may kick and scream, but it HAS to be cleaned! Clean it with soap and water, then pour some peroxide on it a few times before cleaning it with soap and water again. Put Neosporin on it and bandage it up as good as possible. In a few days, it should start to heal up. She should be fine. If it doesn't start to heal, or gets worse, then take her to the doctor.

even in the experience that your daughter became 5,10,15- or maybe 2 many years previous, she could nonetheless would desire to scrub that shrink. She ought to be in possibility of an infection, particularly thinking the undeniable fact that there is dust on it. additionally, ever heard of a few thing referred to as superbug? Google it. in the experience that your no longer making plans to- then all i will say is that if that germ reaches your daughters shrink, there is no longer something that is performed. make certain which you do wash it out with some antibacterial cleansing soap and heat water. permit her play contained in the water together with her hand as lengthy as she'd % to, it will be cleansing it. Then, yet a bandaid on it. exchange the bandaid a minimal of two times an afternoon. If issues look getting worse interior an afternoon and a 0.5, take her to a physician. superb of success.

Well, would still try to wash it with some mild soap and warm water. THen watch it to make sure she doesn't get an infection. Which very well could happen. You just need to be careful and watch it closely. If it is a very big concer, call her doctor. They may end up telling you to bring her in, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Or they may jsut tell you to keepa close eye out for infection. So, it's up to you.

if it's already scabbed over, then it's fine.
as long as it wasn't on metal (b/c then she may need a tetanus shot) then the cut will heal and the dirt will work it's way out attached to the scab.
a little dirt never hurt anyone:)

if/when you can, maybe when she sleeps, try to saok it in warm water. this can help get the dirt out if it isn't totally scabbed over yet.

take care:)

p.s.
in the future...try a lolipop to get her to sit still long enough to clean it up. and invest in some child fun band aids and neosporin...if you haven't already:)

p.p.s
as for the first answer....it COULD get infected, true....however, i doubt it...unless she exposed the cut to some nasty bacteria or gross place.
it's probably your garden variety of dirt and your kid will be fine. just watch it and if it looks, red, swollen, green, yellow or goopy, then take her to the dr.

take care:)

If there's dirt in there and it's closed up, you need to get that cleaned out or it could become infected.

Next time, even if it takes two of you to hold her down while she screams, clean out the wound.

I would not worry too much about it..Throw her in the tub and let her play for a while to help wash it out..Odds are, it will partially reopen during the bath...My kids have done this tons of times...NEver a problem! I cant keep shoes on my 4yo, and he constantly hurts his feet and I dont find out about it until much later!

As far as the wound, you can treat that yourself with some anti-bacterial cream.

However, you should seriously consider taking her in to get a tetanus shot.
