While many cases of hiccups develop spontaneously, hiccups are known to develop often in specific situations, such as eating too quickly, taking a cold drink while eating a hot meal, eating very hot or spicy food, laughing vigorously or coughing, or drinking an excess of an alcoholic beverage. Hiccups may be caused by pressure to the phrenic nerve by other anatomical structures, or rarely by tumors. Usually home remedies should be tried first, before medications are given. Usually if they last for more than 3 hours, it is advised to see a doctor.

Eating/drinking too fast can cause the hiccups. I know this sounds weird, but it does work (for real).... for getting rid of the hiccups, bend over so that your head is a little lower than your waist. Take a cup of water and drink (slowly) from the opposite side of the cup (not the side you would drink from if you were right-side up). After a few slow sips, slowly stand straight up again.

I'm not sure what this does to your diaphragm, but it works in stopping the hiccups.

My husband suffered from hiccups for about a week, several years ago, about drove me crazy and him too. I found this on the web, and it really worked. Hold you nose, take a big breath, don't let it out, and swallow, do it again, but don't breathe out, do it as many times as you can ( it will hurt after about the second time). It stopped his, and they so far have not came back, but if they do, he will try it again. Good luck.

Hold your breath for as long as you can. Some kind soul on the internet gave me that advice once and it worked great (I had been going for well over an hour). Now it works for me every time on 1st or sometimes 2nd try.

Ok - I am a Mother of Seven and here are my home remedies - They work Everytime!!

1. get a glass of water and hold your breath and swallow several times

2. get a teaspoonful of sugar and swallow it without a drink

Hiccups are caused by the diaphram and so are linked to both swallowing and breathing

Just try these - they will work
