Yes, I remember it. "Silent Spring" was a farce then just as it would be now if published today. Written by an alarmist who had only a single datum on DDT, this one book has caused death of innocent children in so-called 3rd world countries because of the B.S. DDT ban.
No, that is NOT happening with the bees. The cause of the colony collapse is yet to be determined but at this time, there is speculation that the magnetic field change is causing it.

Rachel Carson wrote about the use of pesticides in America and the affect on fauna and flora.
Decline of pollinators is thought to be varied; pesticides, loss of the fauna and flora necessary to sustain the habitat, possible parasites and disease, destroying the hives and competition from native insects. Pollution is a factor too. Maybe even them tough African bees.
Honey bees are not a native species to America.
But we need the pollination of the bees to ensure our agriculture is viable.
So I guess yes there is some correlation between the book Silent Spring and what is happening today with the honey bees.

Silent Spring was filled with poor science and outright lies. Rachel Carson is directly responsible for the deaths of millions of children in Africa from malaria and other insect born diseases that could be controlled or eradicated through the proper use of DDT.

Yes Silent Spring is causing the bees to die. And so is SARS, and Y2K, and "Global Warming", and Killer Bees, and Cell Phones, and Power Lines. Hell bees don't stand a chance. If I were a bee, I'd kill myself.
What nonsense.

According to NOVA they believe it is a virus that came from Australia.
There is much more going on and I am going to live it to those who study bees before I decide what the cause.

Not exactly.
It was clear that a large part of the problem with birds was the overuse of pesticides, in ways that simply ignored their environmental side effects. We could simply start being more thoughtful about what pesticides we used, and how we used them. That could (and did) make for a major improvement.
The bees problem is more mysterious. Is it connected to something we're doing? Almost certainly, but exactly what? We don't know. So the way forward is not clear.
