You have total say in this. When you get to the Reception Batallion at Fort Benning, part of your in-processing is setting your life insurance policy (SGLI) and determining your beneficaries. You may select two and also determine who gets what percentage. Currently the policies available are up to $400,000.

I'm guessing since you are 17, and still a minor, it would be your parents until you turn 18, then you can choose which next of kin or spouse (If you get married).
I recall when I enlisted long, long, ago...that it can't be your girlfriend/ fiancee. It's gotta be family.
Good luck soldier!

Next of kin that is living. Dad, Mom, Wife, Son, Daughter, Brother, Sister, Grandchild, Grandparents. I believe that to be the correct order.

whoever you designate. It can be your parents, your dog, your girlfriend, your cousin Willy. Be very careful though.. make sure that it is slated to go to somebody you really want it to. . Hint: GF come and go. parents are yours forever.
If you have a favorite niece or nephew, even if they are a minor, you can set them up for a good start in life as well.

You select the beneficiary. In the Navy we had to review Page 2 in our service records on a regular basis to ensure our beneficiary information was correct.

Make sure you stipulate who you want it to go to. Think positively! You are only 17, hopefully you will have a wonderful, long life!

17. My god that makes me sad. My brother was 17 when he went to Vietnam. It ruined him as a person. He never got over what he was made to do in the name of so called freedom. Anyhow your parents will get the insurance since your still a child.

It should be on your policy. If not, it will be next of kin and a Lawyer will collect 28% of it because you never specified.

You need to designate someone as beneficiary so you can be sure it goes to whom you want. Otherwise, it goes to your next of kin, who I assume would be your parents.
