Hi I am doing an assignment for my Uni coursework and it would be great if as many people as possible could answer the question. Any answers or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

First of all, it is pedophile and secondly, what do YOU think? Are you a parent? Of course parents should be aware if they are (and you chose the right word) LURKING in areas where there ANY children. Pedophiles are defined as adults sexually stimulated/attracted to CHILDREN. what part of that would leave any room for debate as to whether or not parents should know one is lurking around their neighborhood.

You can check the sex offender registry in your state online ANDN you can add extra precaution for your children by registering to receive an alert call when a registered offender moves into your zip code. You can register up to THREE zip codes and the state police will call you (at times when children are not typically answering the phone - early am and late pm) and will leave a message on your machine if there is no answer. You can then go online and look up the picture. It is worth the effort. In my opinion, pedophiles will NEVER change so we must make every effort possible to see that they are controlled. AWARENESS of their presence among us is ONE way we can.

As I understand it the majority of children that are abused are abused by a member of their family or a close friend of the family I think it is about 95% so they the should be more concerned about the people they know around them rather than some person who may or may not be a paedophile or some who is because they have been convicted and is under police supervision. I am not trying to frighten parents just pointing out the irrationality of worrying about rumour and gossip.

Of course they should be informed. No one wants their child around a pedophile! You can check state registries to see if there is anyone in your area and there are several other sites where you can input your address and get info about registered sex offenders in the area, pictures, crimes committed and last known place of employment. Of course, its the unregistered ones that pose a problem. Good luck with your assignement. As a parent, I know I check these lists frequently.

I love the comment about painting their houses!!!!

your children's safety...(in my opinion) should come before the safety of paedophiles. if they choose to become sexual predators and put children's lives in danger. then they must face the consequences of they're actions. the trouble is! that since society has become inundated with self acclaimed "experts" on just about every social deviant that exists, we have allowed the formation of army's of badly trained do gooders 'to look after the interests of the paedophile, but none to look after the interests of the child. in fact where criminality is concerned, there seems to be an ever growing industry on the back of the social misery caused by criminals. and i personally think that the army of fools that look after these dangerous people are directly responsible for the deaths of many people. because they actually pursue the release of criminals for they're own business interests, and there for they're own financial gain. i've long been of the opinion that families should be able to claim damages from these happless idiots because clearly they are ill trained to do the job properly.

Absolutely, but then what? You realise it won't happen unless there is a special little village created for them. The facts are that paedophiles live among us and cannot be forced away from their homes. Families will not want to live around a paedophile but cannot live anywhere else because it's too damned expensive! So....lets create a community for them, then blow it up! Yes and they can through each states sex offender list. Check it out - there are pictures.
Child Sex offenders are legally required to stay away from schools and children.
This is effective for the sex offenders who do register...if they don't they are pursued by police until they do register.
Of course that counts only for the pedophiles that have been caught. It is every parents job to be suspicious of anyone over interested in their child. It is also every parents job to maintain opencommunication so the child can voice their concerns over the 'icky' feeling they get when someone is over interested in them.
It is amazing to me how many sickos there are out there...

Of course they should be concerned, there are web sites that tell parents how many child molesters live in their area and where they live, they even provide photos. Reformed Paedophiles, I'm not sure they can be reformed as adults, perhaps as adolsecents there may be hope.

Always! It's seems that unless a pedophile hurts a child, all they get from the law is a slap on the wrist. It's up to parents to protect their children, not wait for a tragedy to happen before the police actually lock these pedos up for good. Even reformed pedophiles can strike, and it happens too often for my comfort.

I thought that sex offenders had to register with the state and are not allowed to live or go anywhere near where children go - daycare centers, parks, maybe even the mall.

And YES. Parents should and need to be aware and should also closely monitor their children.

yes, parents need to know so that they can protect their kids. As a parent my most important job until my kids leave my house is to make sure they are protected and that I raise them to be productive members of society. The ability to do that can be destroyed by one incident with a sexual predator. I want to know before I purchase a house if there are any pedophiles living on our street.
