When I applied for the academy I had to get a physical exam from a doc, pass a physical agility pre screen, take a 567 Yes/no psyke exam, and I was accepted. After the academy, you have to take a state test to be certified. Then, if you did not get sponsored by a department, you can begin the application process. Which can include, but not limited to, an extensive background investigation, a chat with your neighbors friends and co-workers, psyke test and talk with a psychologist, physical agility test, civil service test, oral review board, polygraph.

I know you must pass extensive background checks and if accepted you have to go to an academy or training facility. Last I checked they required a minimum of 20 hours of college or tech. school.
At the training facility you will go through a mini-boot camp where they will teach you how to shoot and handle certain scenarios.
I can tell that many of the folks on this site have had bad experiences with police, however most of the officers I have met, with the exception of a few, were honest and very professional. I have been let off many tickets by simply being respectful and friendly to the officer.
There are a few out there with that "Badge and Gun" mentality, but I feel they are in the minority not the majority.
