Pound for pound I would say husky. They were bred to pull sleds, shepherds were bred as livestock animals. It is only a guess though. Huskys are also more scrappy IMO too then GSDs are, but both are quite powerful dogs so it is most likely a close call. GSD are used in search and rescue more then huskys, so they must be very strong, but it might be because they are more easily trained for the job. I don't not much about the sport of weight pulling, but if you search sites about it you could see if one breed excels at it more then the other.

Just curious why you want to know? Are you looking for a breed for a particular job or sport like weight pulling?

The Siberian Husky is stronger than the GSD in some ways. They were initially bred for pulling sledges and are still used for that in many parts of the world. The GSD, although powerful dogs, do not have the same stamina for long distance travel. They were originally what the name suggests, sheepdogs. They can jog trot for long periods of time, but they could not sustain hard running for long periods the way the Husky can. 'Strength' is very difficult to quantify from breed to breed.

I think a mature male German shephard would probably be stronger than a mature male husky.

Stronger in what way? If you are talking pulling strength I would go with the Husky. If you are talking generally, they would probably be pretty evenly matched if they were both in equally good condition.

Most US-origin GSD's are structurally weak and prone to hip and elbow dysplasia. Lots of Sibes compete in weight-pull contests, but not many GSD's. OTOH, GSD's are protective while Sibes are not.

The best GSD's are from European bloodlines.

depends on the individual dog, of course, but generally speaking, huskies are stronger and shepherds are smarter. huskies are bred for their strength and endurance (e.g. pulling sleds through the snow) and shepherds are bred both for physical prowess and quick intellect (e.g. police dogs).

i agree, it depends. Huskies were bred for strength pulling sleds etc. but german shepherds are stronger in other ways... and smarter...

If you want strength, get a Mastiff. They have the strongest jaws of any dog, and their body strength is enormous as well.
