In the UK class one is for fully articulated HGV's and vehicles over the class 2 weight limit, class two is any vehicle over 7.5 tonnes and below c2 limit.

Well yes, you have the same rights as a 16 year old, the right - and duty - to obey the sprrd limits! As a professional driver you have more to lose than most by collecting points so it was pretty stupid to do 40 in a 30 area on your bike. Is it fair, yes i think it is! If you will do 40 in a 30 area on your bike it is reasonable to suppose that you would do the same in your lorry! As you have only recently obtained your class 1 entitlement presumably you will remember the statistics regarding the increase in braking distance at these 2 speeds, and the increase in probability of any pedestrian you hit dying.

An H.G.V. (Heavy Goods Vehicle) Class 1 licence is now called an L.G.V. (Large Goods Vehicle) Class C+E. The classification was changed about 14 years ago.
It is the category required to drive articulated lorries. The Government replaced "heavy" with "large", as it was felt to be less emotive.

As twisted ace says , it is the 'old' name for class C+E for Artics & Drawbar combinations and is the 'top' category. Weights are from about 24 tonnes upwards ( 3 axles), through to 44 tonnes ( 6 axles) and above into the 'Special Categories' where no extra licences are needed , only experience.

In the US class 1 is the old term for class A. Drivers licenses are put into classes defined by the weight of the vehicle and the amount of passengers in the vehicle. Here is the definition for commercial drivers licenses or CDLs.
Class A: Any combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GWVR) of 26,001 or more pounds, provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
Class B: Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.
Class C: Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials.

I would call it a Class C driver's license. I wouldn't call it i1st class or regular, because the real term for it is the Class C. Hope that helps you.
