How can fundies talk about Catholics or people from other belief systems when their own brethren are teaching that God HATES people?? Is picketing at a FUNERAL considered an act of loving thy neighbor?
The God I serve is not cruel and hateful but is merciful and loving.
*Members promised to picket future funerals with placards bearing such slogans as "Thank God for dead soldiers" and "God hates fags." *
I do not condone homosexuality but I would never spew this kind of hate and neither would God.

Skalite...so while we're being fair...why do so many fundies try to make it seem that all Catholics condone molestation or that all priests are guilty?

Actually Locket, the church describes itself as following Primitive Baptist and Calvinist principles.

Born-Again Catholic...I think they have totally missed my whole point for asking the question. But you are indeed very insightful. ;-)

Do you think the fundamentalists who distance themselves from the Westboro crackpots, and ask not to be lumped in with them, are actually getting the irony here?

The deal with Fred Phelps and Company is not so much that they are "fundies," but rather they are strict Calvinists. That is, they firmly believe in a sort of predestination; a divine plan. They are rejoicing in "God's plan" rather than rejoicing in a particular person's death. In other words, whatever happens, good or bad, is something for them to praise, regardless of the situation. It does not seem that way and it is a bit difficult to ge inside their mindset, but I have watched and studied this group on and off for some time.
As a side note, Phelps went to Seminary with Billy Graham. When Graham said that he did not believe Hell was an actual location, but rather a seperation from God, Phelps declared him an apostate and wrote a lengthy piece concerning the event.
Phleps is also a lawyer and made much of his money as a result of past protests. He and his group would really push the buttons and peoples' emotions, especially during a time like a funeral. This often led to punches being thrown and a law suit following.
As for the comment about god hateing evil, one must ask why he created it?
I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. (Isaiah 45:7)
Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it? (Amos 3:6)
Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not evil and good? (Lamentations 3:38)

This group is NOT affiated with any Christian denomination and no Christian in their right mind would ever endorse the hate and disrespect they bring wherever they go.
They threatened to demonstrate at the funeral of my friend Shawn when he was killed in Iraq.
I thank God that they somehow had to cancel at the last minute. I sure asked God to keep them away.
They have taken a handful of scriptures and have bent and twisted them so far out of shape that they cannot be recognized any more.
These folks are sincere in their beliefs, sincerely wrong.

I have kind of an odd advantage on this topic, in that I know someone from Westborough Baptist.
It is not correct to label this group as "fundamentalist." Some of their doctrines vaguely resemble fundamentalism, but their view of God is what I call "semi-dualistic." They claim to be Calvinists, but unlike true Calvinists, they believe that the nature of God as most of us understand Him is only expressed to Christians, while to nonchristians He acts as a sadist. They believe that God is joyful in His judgment of sinners, and that He has predestined their sinful actions so that He can exercise His right to take pleasure in their punishment.
This doctrine is not Christian on any level. Rather, it makes a mockery of the Christian faith, explicitly confessing a heresy that true Christians are often falsely accused of believing.
The thing to keep in mind when evaluating Westborough Baptist is that the "Baptist" label doesn't really mean anything except that you practice adult baptism. Pretty much anyone can attach to this any convoluted belief system they want to.

What I want to know is why more Christians aren't picketting THEM. Shut them up for the gods sake!!! They make you ALL look like morons to the rest of the world. Most Christians whimper into their Wed night Bible study coffee at these people, yet do NOTHING about them!

There are some real radical 'Christians' out there. They believe that God hates everybody they hate. God only knows why. I'm certain that there's some kind of reason they feel that way. I doubt if it has anything to do with Christ or God and eventually, what goes around, comes around.

i know that these so called christians are anything but...i was a christian once upon a time, and one of my best friends is a christian.
these people are hate mongers. their only role seems to be spreading their "faith" like some sort of virus, and creating as much chaos and discord as possible.
may the powers that be open their eyes and soften their hearts, and may the goddess protect their children.

yes, I agree that's too much!
to be honest, there's nothing that can stop these fundies to spread hate and act on it as long as they think that God is with them just because they are fundies.
who can tell if one day they would go berserk and just harm all the people who don't belong in their club, and they wouldn't feel any remorse because they would think they are doing it for God? that's what makes them scary, seriously.

God does not hate anybody, rather he wants al sinners to be saved, its the very reason he sent Jesus!
God love sinners, and wants the very best for them!
Ezekiel 18:23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?
Luke 15:7
I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent
Matthew 9:13
But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
Exodus 34:6The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin

In reality, God and Hate cannot coexist. God doesn't hate any person, for He created us all.
The members of the picket line were being quite foolish and very un-Christ-like.
