You got it right. Life is what you and your surroundings make of it. I call fate/destiny, simply a chance factor, some times you get head and some times tail. You cannot win a lottery unless you go and buy a ticket. To speak in normal language, fate helps those who put some efforts. And if you get some money lying on road, it is sheer chance/fate.

Both are equally true and untrue. The universe works in ways that are not always definable within the limited confines of human language. There is what could be called a fate or destiny connected with human life yet that fate or destiny is malleable and flows with what is.

I do not believe in fate - either of the Astrological kind nor of the Religious fatalist kind.
Were things thus, we would be free from regret. We are told to seize the day and live to the full and most people here probably want to do good rather than evil.
Thus while we may be pre-disposed to do good, nevertheless we do bad.
So while we are not fore-ordained as individuals to a particular destiny, as there are only two final resting places for the human race (IN Christ or outside of Christ) we are fore-ordained from birth to be forever in of these two groups.
What you make of it will determine which group you end up in.

Not knowing the rest of the mysterious, we are supposed to make our own fate and destiny. It's in self-help lessons, right?

Both.
What we make of it will often determine our fate/destiny,
both in this life and in the afterlife.

The choices of other people effect you at least as much, sometimes more, than your own choices.
If life is what I make it, then why can't I change the world?

There's been hypnosis studies where individuals went back to prebirth times and realized they'd chosen negative events to happen to them for growth purposes. So some is "fated"....some is how you handle those events.
