You know those little strings with mice on them, a nice bed to lay in is always nice, matching water dishes, squeaky ball, nice clean litter box, cat sweaters, a ringing bell, warm milk, canned foods, and most of all its own kitty blanket- at walmart. My kittys love these toys!

a proper cat tower - NOT just a scratching post.. you want one with a place the cat can sit at the top - cats like to be high up.. place near a window so they can look out.. cut off any dangly toys - they are choking hazzards.. some cat towers have them. some dont
Honeysuckle toys..
lots of different toys - cats prefer toys they have not seen for a while, so you need a container to keep some toys in and change them around every 2-3 weeks.
stainless steel bowls for food and water - NEVER use plastic.. it cannot be disinfected or cleaned (its pourous)
non-scented clumping is cats perfered litter... but silicone beads are best for odor control... ( I perfer having 2 boxes in 2 different places in the house)

Cats are strange creatures, I have scratch posts and trees that some days they are so popular and other days they won't touch. They have a wide variety of toys but prefer to pull the magnets off the front of the fridge or raid the desk draw for biros ! They have their own beds but prefer the back of the chair, top of the printer etc. I give up.
Easiest and probably cheapest option is get him a kitty companion to wrestle with.

A cat tree is almost a must. Cats love to be above everything. If you ebay here is a seller that has wonderful cat furniture at good prices. Just watch your shipping and handling it can be really expensive. Ebay Seller's ID armarkat. Just do an advanced search for seller. Something else that my cats love is liquid catnip and this can be purchased at Petco and many other pet stores.

Other than a couple of good litter boxes, a pair of bowls that they can't knock over, and a good quality food, I really haven't bought anything special for my kitties. But you might want to get your cat a toy that you can put food inside so he can play with it and get his meals at the same time.
And yes, something to scratch on is a good idea too, if your cat still has his claws.

I like everyone elses answers, but what my cats enjoy the most is catnip, for sure, these cardboard scratch posts that you can put catnip in, and little rattling mice. Oh yeah, and they like those tubes to run through and those round plastic toys that balls roll around.

You wouldn't need fancy toys or furniture. Your kitty is gonna scratch the sofa and end up sleeping on your bed!! but the one thing that will drive them nuts and keep them entertained for hours are laser pointers!

some of the best things my cats enjoy aren't bought i roll up old socks or aluminum foil in a ball they love to carry and swat these around for hours, paper bags are a favorite they love to hide inside and jump on them to make them crinkle,a low cardboard box will keep my cats entertained for hours, when they are done jumping in and out of it they like to curl up and take a nap in it
some of the things i have that are purchased that they really enjoy are thier cat tree/scratching post,a kitty hotel with two levels and little hammocks for sleeping in(very inexpensive bought at walmart for 20 something dollars) little cat toys with bells inside or feathers attached to them

I bought all kinds of things for my cat as well and he uses none of the things I actually purchased!!! My cat really likes to play with old shoe laces and hair ties. They dont cost a thing and I bet it will play with those more than anything else!!
