I haven't spoken to any of those freaks in years.

Yes, dear, you are holy. Don't tell anyone but I have always secretly hated Andy and Opie. Those boys make my life miserable, they are always bringing home fish and expecting me to clean them. They demand a hot meal every night. Getting them to wake up and go to church every Sunday is like pulling teeth. They make me so angry. That's why some nights I put a little sleeping powder in their chocolate cake. Even I need a night off once in a while.

The context is referring to the cost of discipleship

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters— yes, even his own life— he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. ... any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple."

What's he talking about is seeking first the kingdom of God - at all costs.

So for example if you come from a Muslim family and they command you not to become a Christian, who are you going to love more?

Actually all this would be clear if you read the whole gospel - and try the whole New Testament, rather than taking verses out of context. (Or was that you intention?)

Luke 14:26 states that you should love Jesus more than your own family...to be a follower. I am sorry you hate your family...to grow you will have to repent from this...

Jesus obviously did not mean that his followers should literally hate their family members, since he commanded people to love even their enemies. (Matthew 5:44) Rather, Jesus here meant that his followers must love family members less than God. In keeping with that understanding, the Bible says that Jacob "hated" Leah and loved Rachel, which meant that he did not love Leah as much as he loved her sister, Rachel. (Genesis 29:30-32) Even our own "soul," or life, Jesus said, should be hated, or loved less, than Jehovah! Also, 1 John 3:15 states: "Everyone who hates his brother is a manslayer, and you know that no manslayer has everlasting life remaining in him." 1 John 4:20, 21 states: "If anyone makes the statement: "I love God," and yet is hating his brother, he is a liar. For he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot be loving God, whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him, that the one who loves God should be loving his brother also." So, to be considered "holy," you must maintain physical, mental, moral, and spiritual cleanness.

Maybe to them you may be the freak, But to answer your question, never take one verse out of context when we have many more telling us to love our parents, What Jesus was saying was not you Have to literally hate your family, But if you put your family before serving God, that is wrong, Therefore Jesus was referring to saying that Jesus comes first in our lives over that of our family. My family don't only consists of my brothers & sister & Dad & Mother, It also consist of my wife, My children & grandkids, am I to literally hate my wife, NO, NO, NO. Jesus tells us to Love our wife, But now if your wife or husband, says you either drop your faith in Jesus & take me, then you are to keep your faith & let the unbelieving leave if they desire to.

Hate your family for Jesus sake, not your own.

He was talking about if your family did things contrary to the teachings of Jesus, you have to be willing to separate yourself from them. Remember the context of time Jesus was speaking in.

hate in the biblical form means disregaurd..but that was for a family who oppses God..for instance if my mom worshipped rututyr and I jesus and i made an older lady who was like a mom that also belived in Jesus she would become sorta like my MOM in christ or a sister in christ a new family..just like Jesus told peter to take care of His mom (who was really Jesus mom) while being crucified..God Bless

Though I don't know that verse exactly, I think it means you should be able to seperate yourself from your family, and love God over all others. So if your family tell you to go against God, you should reject that and follow God anyway.

the word is poorly translated. It means love less by comparison.

Hatred does not make you holy. It makes you a child of the devil, and not God.

It means that you have to hate all things that get in your way of serving Jesus Christ.
