I don't know if it's true but I heard in China they have a program for helping the elderly and I think it's a good idea.
When you are young you volenteer your time , lets say 2 hours per week to go to an elderly persons home and help them.
Things like washing , ironing ,cleaning, company ect for free.In return ,how ever many hours you donate, when you are old you get that many hours free help.
In Australia our goverment is letting down the elderly it may be the same where you live.
I would like your ideas how to get something like this started.
Is it a good idea?
Should it be church run ? If so religion should not be a concideration as to who gets help and who does not.
Should it be goverment run ?
It would need funding , as it would involve administration .Would you donate or should the goverment at least fund it ? I don't feel you can charge the helper or the one being helped that would defeat the purpose
Can you see it working if run properly ?
Any constructive input welcom

I think it would take a long time to start something like that through the government (although city governement might take a lot less time than national...) so starting something like that through a church might be a good idea. I think it would be important to make it available to all people regardless of religion. I've never heard that the Bible or any other religious text encourages only showing kindness to people of your own religion.

In the meantime while you're working on setting up a program, there are a lot of opportunites to help the elderly through other programs or just by reaching out to someone in your community or church. I used to work in a nursing home and really love people who take the time to show some love to the elderly :-)

That's an important issue that bothers me as well. In my culture, the elderly are everyone's responsibility hence, they are never alone because family, neighbours and friends chip in. In the west it's a different way of life where everyone minds there own business and of course when you are old then its quite difficult to befriend anyone then.

I think it's a good idea to render some form of service to the elderly and then reap it in return.

Of course someone has make some form of payment in oder to get it running and aslo to encourage the young. I think govenrments have to pay for the services, because it's an utter disgrace when the elderly are forgotten after what many of them have done for their countries.

I know of at least one country (not mine, the US), where community service is mandatory or you won't graduate from high school. I'll probably get thumbs down from Americans, whose "rights" are more valuable than people, but I found that to be a great idea. I'll go further and say that their kids were more mature and more polite than ours.

Good luck, it'll never happen in the States. Heck, over here you can't even make convicts pick up trash. It violates their rights.

I think it's a wonderful idea. It's sad though that there has to be a quid pro quo. The young should simply realize they will be old some day and offer to help since they would hope for help themselves some day. The problem is that the young have in large part abandoned respecting and caring for their elders because it's inconvenient.

PS: I know thumbsdowns are annoying when you don't "get it" so glittergirl I wanted to publicly apologize. There's one thumbsdown and it was from me. I meant to hit the thumbs up. I completely agree with your statement. So my apologies.

Yes it could be done as part of a community based effort, volunteers, etc, but not as part of criminal rehab ie community service. It could be organised by local gov't with help from church synagogue mosque etc, and other community groups. As for funding I'm not yet sure how it could work, donations, charitable efforts, gov't funding or mixture of all 3.

We are the only country that disrespects the elderly.......they get old and we throw them in a old folks home for someone else to take care of. My sister and I take care of our 86 year old father 24/7 just out of respect for the idea that he raised us....now it's his turn. Respect the elderly.....be kind to your kids someday you may need them.

Great idea, great passion. You need to start, get others to help, and then the answers to your questions will solve themselves as opportunities present themselves.

This is a real religious activity and should be organized by all religious organizations. All religions.
