Mine worked going from Holyhead to Dublin and also on the return journey, though the costs were quite higher than the usual usage....check with either the ferry company or your service provider.

When traveling down the East Coast it will work within a few miles of land (varies), but once in open water it wont. There is usually a 'phone on board ship however that will work, but will be a bit expensive. When you approach the Belgian Coast (zeebrugge), you will receive a text message telling you which network you are on and the costs of 'phoning to the U.K., or even just a 'Welcome to Belgium' message. Whichever it is don't forget it will be international and therefore more Expensive (I find it usually averages 58pence a minute, with Orange). Texts a bit cheaper at about 28 pence per minute.
A word of warning; Whoever you ring or text will also be charged.
Enjoy the journey

It'll only work when you're within about 10km of land., so only for part of the journey.
