Yes, Personally I claimed back over £1000 and have helped many more people to claim back thousands of pounds in charges.
However, there is currently a hold on bank charge claims which has been in place since the end of August. This is because the OFT are taking the banks to the high court to decide once and for all if bank charges are unlawful. The case is scheduled to start at the end of January 2008, and is expected to run for a year.
If the OFT win then it will be quicker and easier to get bank charges back, and everyone will be able to successfully get their charges back. However, if the banks win then it will mean the end of bank charge claims.
Because the high court case will create a final legaly binding ruling, the FSA have granted a hold to the banks on dealing with claims, until the results of the case are announced.
If you still want to claim, then its a good idea to do so now, so that it will be dealt with quicker if the OFT win. At this stage, all you need to do is to write a letter to the banks head office asking for your charges back, and this should be sent by recorded delivery.
The bank will then acknowledge and log your claim, and then it will be placed on hold.
For more information on how to claim, and the latest news about the current situation, have a look at me website below which is kept up to date with everything happening with bank charge claims.

At the time of opening of account the bank might have disclosed their charges for various services. If the debit is in accordance with the disclosed charges nothing can be done. However if the bank has overcharged ie,above disclosed rate, you can get refund.Normally if you write to them ,they will refund.Still if you dont get refund you have to proceed legally.
The banks know that most of the people do not fight even if they are overcharged.

Yes. Go straight to the top ~ bank manager or asst manager ~ and ask them to refund your charges in person. On the phone they have a bit more courage to deny your request but in person they are likely to cave in to your demands.
If necessary, talk loud so other customers can hear your conversation. *hehe*

my brother got £1200 back
magy -you are wrong. the charges are actually illegal in that the banks are not allowed by law to make a profit from them, so by charging anything more than £3 or£4 they are breaking the law, making their terms unenforceable. fact.

I don't know, but if the fees were disclosed to you when you opened the account you're probably SOL. You can't agree to them at first, then complain when they show up.
I am posting from the US, so if you are in another country, I can't offer any advice. In the US you can legally be charged fees, if they are disclosed up front.
