I know what I think, I just wanted to "hear" your input. I find it amazing how hurtful others will be when they DO have that anonymity to shield them from feeling the reverb.

Some people are so unhappy with themselves that they try to spread it and make other people feel as low as them. Sad.... but true!

You beat those f*ckers by not feeling bad!

When you are sometimes entire countries away, and the only hint that you exist is a piece of text, I guess some people forget that there is a real person on the computer.

You will never know who they are, so it doesn't affect them to be rude and mean to others.

I think it is quite inappropriate. Some people are really nasty. And it is sometimes because they haven't read what you wrote properly or think you are lying. Mean comments like this are easy enough to laugh off, because they are so ignorant.
I got one mean comment once saying what I was asking about isn't world changing and important, and to grow up. I didn't realise that every question on Yahoo Answers had to be world changing, lol.

On the other hand, some people may not even realise or consider themselves to be rude or mean. It may just be their personality has been misinterpreted. It can also sometimes be difficult to express one's self over the Internet.

Because they ARE rude, inappropriate, and plain mean. And even more so, immature. (And we're not talking about just age here.)

Let's face it...we all have that side in us. We all get annoyed, angry, sassy...the works. But especially in the last few years, we have come to find this an acceptable way to communicate--we see it treated as funny all the time in sitcoms, movies, the media. We see it and we emmulate it. It takes a very mature person to perhaps even appreciate the release (who doesn't want to act rudely at times, and boy, it's sometimes fun/funny to see someone else do it), but know it's NOT how you should actually _behave_.

Moreover, as the "customer is always right" mentality has ballooned out of proportion, we have had our egos stroked to the point of feeling entitled. This breeds the perceived "right" to be any way we feel like being; if we were rude, they must have deserved it.

Last, and certainly not least, the use of words is a dying art. To express anything, especially displeasure or anger, in a clear and constructive way isn't easy. It takes _skill_, and skill is learned, practiced, and honed. There is very little in this US society that asks that of us anymore. Children sass their parents openly, media supports the verbal abuse of one another as entertainment, and we, ourselves, don't demand that respect of one another, let alone give it.

I often wondered the same thing as I started reading and answering here. Why do people waste time answering with some smart-*** answer or put-down? You don't have to agree with the asker, but at the very least, dissent with dignity--for both yourself as well the person you are addressing!

Great observation/question!

I agree with Daisy

I would add that they are essentially cowards who probably wouldnt be as rude to your face as they are online, but the anonymity of the internet allows them to behave like idiots.

NEVER take it to heart when someone insults you for no reason, whether online or in person, always remember that THEY are the person with the problem. Always tell them where to get off - makes you feel better too!

They are basically ignorant people that have nothing better to do than try to make other people feel as badly as they feel about themselves. People think that since they are "anonymous" on the Internet they can say whatever hurtful thing they want.

I think people just like the idea of offending someone. Another reason is that they may be having a really rotten day and are trying to vent. I know when I'm having a bad day, I tend to be a little abrupt in my responses when I really don't mean to.

In the real world I have to hold my tongue, sugar coat the truth. Here, I can just say what I mean, no PC required. If you are offended by the truth you shouldn't be here.

It most likely is the only time they feel powerful. They can abuse and insult others opinions and get away with it because they know nothing of the person they just insulted

I believe it's because the site affords them anonymity. Basically they are rude people who are probably held in check in normal life by the possibility of a smack in the face by an outraged person. Here there's no such threat and they can flex their arrogance with out fear of physical reprisal.
