Download the latest Knoppix and make sure it detects your sound hardware correctly. Do an lsmod to see which modules are loaded. Then compile a new kernel -- get sources from kernel.org -- making sure to specify the driver for your sound card as a module.

If you're not sure what to include, start with "make oldconfig" and say M to everything (or Y if there's no M option). Drivers for hardware you haven't got shouldn't slow a modern system down too much; and in any case, you can always try recompiling without them later.

You may also need the latest ALSA.
