It means "until we see each other again", "see you", "arrivederci"

I agree with the previous answerer that "hasta la vista" is something that a native speaker of Spanish is VERY unlikely to say. Go with something like "hasta luego".

The literal translation is "until the sight" - in other words, "until the next time we see each other".

I have been speaking Spanish for over 40 years and have travelled extensively in the Spanish speaking world; other than in US cowboy films, episodes of Zorro, or cheesy pop songs, I do not think I have ever heard anyone use this expression in real life!

Most Spanish speakers say: "Hasta luego" - which means "See you later".

It means "see ya!", yes, but in a unfriendly way. Let's put it like this: You've been wanting to get rid of a mouse in your house (for example), and suddenly it gets caught in a tramp. Then you are so happy that you 'eliminated' it that you say "hasta la vista!" Have you ever heard "Hasta la vista, baby!", from Arnold Schwarzenegger (on the movie "Terminator"...then he starts shooting his enemy?
