The concerns from shutting down the shuttles are that medium-to-heavy lift capability to low-earth orbit will be temporarily halted while the new Ares-V heavy lift vehicle is developed, tested, and produced. In other words, there won't be any rockets that can launch anything as heavy as the shuttles, until the Ares-V rocket is completed in the mid-2010s.

Other capabilities of the shuttle such as satellite repair missions, will be either not possible, impractical, or very difficult with the new Crew Expedition Vehicle (CEV) and its Ares-1 launch vehicle.

BTW: STS-1 Columbia burned up on reentry over Texas in 2003. The 3 remaining shuttles Atlantis, Discovery, and Endeavour, will remain in operation until the ISS is completed and 1 more Hubble maintenance mission is completed.
