get the BMW 325 is a lot be than the Volvo S40 and its reliable too and have more HP than the S40 T5 and they both has the same gas mileage but the different is the S40 T5 engine is I5 and the BMW 325 is V6. so you want to look stylish with more HP and comfort and safe-ability i say get the BMW 325 because it better than the Volvo with everything.

Volvo. BMW is the most over rated company in the world. If they did not include maintenance at the beginning of their warrantees, then more people would realize how bad these cars really are on reliability. Also, the BMW I drive interface is the worst invention ever, even the Car and DRiver magazine editiors who are extremely biased towards BMW hate that!
So I say get the S40, it has just enough of everything, power, safety, looks, and reliability.
I would recommned the 08 Honda Accord V6 though

The BMW is faster, sleeker, more reliable, amazing fit and finish and build quality. The Volvo is a compact car that you would expect an 16 year-old girl in white to have.

BMW performance and Volvo reliability. Tough choice. you plan on keeping more than 3 years then BMW, if more then Volvo.
