Deuteronomy 4:16- 23.
Deut 4:16 states: "Lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure, the likeness of male or female."
Deut 4:23 states: "Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the LORD thy God hath forbidden thee."
If your avatar is the likeness of any living thing, you are violating God's law. Don't try to get out of it by saying that your avatar isn't a graven image, because the Bible clearly states that a "graven image OR the LIKENESS of any thing" is forbidden. For most of us on R&S, our avatar is the likeness of some living thing.
Man, are you guys in trouble.

SDW: The Bible doesn't say that it's only wrong if you worship the image, it says it's wrong to create such an image.

Oh, I forgot the whole "Jesus cancels out the Old Testament" clause.
Well then please, for crying out loud, let's get rid of that stupid creation myth. It's Old Testament too.

Okay, here's my question:
"Why do you trespass against God's law -- don't you fear for your immortal soul?"

Only if I worship my avatar.
(And I do like Star Wars, but not that much)
EDIT:
Do I really need to explain this to you?
"Graven Image" is another term for an idol, one that is intended to be worshiped. Since God has no visible form (as he states in the passage that you are misrepresenting here--Deut 4:15-31) the people were not to make any graven image to represent--anything they tried would be an incomplete depiction of God. Also, they were not to worship any of the false gods of the Canaanites.
And Christians get lambasted for taking scriptures out of context...

It's about worshipping a graven image.
You can quibble about it if you want, but God looks at the intents of our heart. What I thought you were going to say is that we are spending idle time on here or something, which is more likely the spiritual problem with it.
I'm actually experiencing conviction of the Holy Spirit about the amount of time I'm spending on here as opposed to doing constructive things. When I first found this, I thought it would be an avenue for networking with other Christians and a springboard for Bible study, etc. But most of the posts are too argumentative or outright blasphemous.
I think I'll take my avatar and go elsewhere.

I love when these self proclaimed bible experts who constantly accuse people of being fundamentlists then attempt to interpret verses fundamentally themselves without a iota of understanding the context of the passage. This is talking about making graven images or images to worship. Understand it was common knowledge to the Jews that they shouldn't be worshipping false gods or idols and God reminded them of this periodically. The sad case is these questions are designed to try and find and excuse for the asker to live by his own morality or lack of by brushing aside any serious consideration of the meaning of the kessage.

Deuteronomy is a book in the Old Testament.
When Jesus came, all of the law of the Old Testament became dead. When Jesus died on the cross, He put an end to the Old Testament law (Romans 10:4; Galatians 3:23-25; Ephesians 2:15). In place of the Old Testament law, we are under the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2) which is to, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40). If we do these two things, we will be fulfilling all that Christ wants for us to do, “This is love for God: to obey his commands. And his commands are not burdensome” (1 John 5:3). Technically, the Ten Commandments are not even applicable to Christians. However, 9 of the Ten Commandments are repeated in the New Testament (all except the command to observe the Sabbath day). Obviously, if we are loving God we won't be worshipping other gods or worshipping idols. If we are loving our neighbors, we won't be murdering them, lying to them, committing adultery against them, or coveting what belongs to them. So, we are not under any of the requirements of the Old Testament law. We are to love God and love our neighbors. If we do those two things faithfully, everything else will fall into place.

You use the words "You guys" I take that to mean that you are not including yourself in "You guys" If you aren't one of "you guys" (I suppose you mean Christians) how do you know so very much about the Bible and how to understand it? You evidently understand it better than Christians do and you ain't even a Christian. Wow. Good for you--Not.

The word of God also says in Isa "every tongue that rises up against you shall be proven in the wrong." And one of commandments says "Do not accuse anyone falsely."
The devil has lied to you about what those verses mean. It is clear that you do not know what they mean.

THANK YOU FOR SAYING THAT. They also judge people, give people negative emotions, and blatantly say "god says this" or "the bible says this"...like its the truth, but when an atheist says "God isnt real" then all of a sudden they get thumbs down. Its like we're giving them a break because they have an on average lower IQ.
