he is the central figure of christianity, and is also an important figure in several other religions. he is also called christ, meaning the "anointed one," which corresponds to the hebrew-derived "messiah". the name "jesus" is an anglicization of the greek iesous, itself a hellenization of the hebrew yehoshua or hebrew-aramaic yeshua meaning "yhwh is salvation".

or simply the son of mary

The Lord Jesus Christ is the central theme of Holy Scripture.
One of the foundational truths of the Christian faith is that
Jesus Christ is truly God and that He came into the world as a man by the miracle of virgin birth. Because of this birth he did not receive the Adamic or sin nature. Romans 5:12. As a man, He was absolutely sinless. His sinless life and His bodily resurrection from the dead confirm these truths.

At the end of His ministry on earth, Christ was carried up into heaven. Luke 24:51; Acts 1:9-11. His body was visible to those who were eyewitnesses as He ascended into heaven to fulfill His promise of John 14:2-3. He said, “I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am there ye may be also.” John 14:2-3.

He ascended so that He might enter into His reward, John 17: 5, and continue His ministry for His people. The first chapter of Revelation is John’s testimonial of the enthroned Christ.

Christ is presented in Scripture as a Prophet, a Priest and a King.

As Prophet, He tells men what God has to say to them, and He reveals
God to men. John 1:18.

As Priest, He represents believers before God. Hebrews 4:14-16.

As King, He reigns today in the hearts of those who are loyal to Him. In the coming day, He will reign upon the earth for one thousand years. Revelation 20:2-3. Psalm 72 describes His reign on earth. Then throughout eternity the Lord Jesus will continue to be our King of Kings and Lord of Lords - forever.

Jesus the Mexican boy
born in a truck on the fourth of July
gave me a card with a lady naked on the back
Barefoot at night on the road
Fireworks blooming above in the sky
I never knew I was given the best one from the deck

He never wanted nothing I remember
Maybe a broken bottle if I had two
Hanging behind his holy even temper
Hiding the more unholy things I do

Jesus the Mexican boy
Gave me a ride on the back of his bike
Out to the fair though I welched on a $5 bet
Drunk on Calliope songs
We met a home-wrecking carnival girl
He's never asked for a favor or the money yet

Jesus the Mexican boy
Born in a truck on the 4th of July
I fell in love with his sister unrepentantly
Fearing he wouldn't approve
We made a lie that was feeble at best
Boarded a train bound for Vegas and married secretly

I never gave him nothing I remember
Maybe a broken bottle if I had to
Hanging behind his holy even temper
Hiding the more unholy things I do

Jesus the Mexican boy
Wearing a long desert trip on his tie
Lo and behold he was standing under the welcome sign
Naked the Judas in me
Fell by the tracks but he lifted me high
Kissing my head like a brother and never asking why

By way of answering, I will start the way Jesus started this discussion. Who do you say he is?

Now if you believe scripture, Jesus called himself God. We learn from scripture that he existed in eternity past with the Father as God.

Scripture teaches us that he came in the flesh as a man while retaining all of his status as God.

Scripture also teaches us that he lived a perfect life even though he was tempted to sin. That he willingly took upon himself all the sin of all time and died with it. He did this to pay the price of punishment that we owed.

On the third day he was resurrected bodily and after being seen by many witnesses he ascended into Heaven to retake his place of power and glory.

He is the Lord of Heaven and earth. He is your Saviour and mine. He is the friend of all who desire it.

Now, I ask again, who do you say that he is?

C. S. Lewis, one of the brightest minds of modern times, stated it as a "tri-lemma" You can call him "liar", "lunitic" or Lord. There is no other option he did not intend for there to be. (mine is a sad paraphrase read Mere Christianity )

Ask me if you want a better discussion about this.

edit-- Watch this short video, it covers it pretty well:

I know someone named Jesus, but I guess you can't really tell who someone is until you love them.
