Take into consideration the kind of work you will be doing and the clothing appropriate for that. Think about the climate and the availability of items you'll need when you get there. Don't take any more than necessary as long as you can buy the things you need (like grooming supplies), Consider too the leisure activities you will be enjoying there and what items you'll need for that.

You should know the kind of climate they have, for you to bring the right clothes unless you have plenty of money to buy.
Know if the country has plenty of deodorant, I'm not kidding...that's my dilemma now, I'm in the place that deodorant is virtually unknown, no wonder they smell...If you go to an English speaking country then there is no need for you to bring mp3/4 or ipod to keep you sane. And furthermore know the different traditions and customs of the country so won't be totally shock for the dramatic change you will encounter.
