There are a LOT of different religions on this earth.... What you are talking about is Roman Catholicism, in a particular historical period.
The key here is not that people were religious, but rather that they lacked scientific knowledge. The two are not mutually exclusive, you know. In fact, the Mayans were deeply religious, but also had a great deal of knowledge about astronomy. So did Abraham.

Hmmmm,I wonder who the dim witted jerk that gave me a thumbs down was?
Well to get a better idea, our Solar System is 4 billion miles in radius, and it took over 30 years for a space probe traveling at 25,000 miles per hour to reach 9 billion miles into space.
1 light year is 5.9 trillion miles,it would take over 20,000 years at that speed to go one light year.
The closest star to our sun (the star of our Solar System) is about 5 light years away.So it would take 100,000 years for that same space probe to reach the nearest star to our sun.The light emitted from that star is 5 years old,we are seeing that star as it looked like 5 years ago,so if the star suddenly dissapeared,we would know 5 years later.
Our Galaxy is called the Milky Way galaxy, it is home to 200 billion stars, some bigger and some smaller then our sun.
The few hundred closest stars to our Sun,have been observed for planets,256 have been found so far,and about 4 have a chance for life,1 with a GREAT chance, now this is 256,there are billions of planets out there in our galaxy alone, all orbiting their own star.
And our Galaxy is only one in a group of a few dozen, and those dozen are one in a group of a few hundreds, and those hundreds are one in a group of many thousands.
In fact,a picture was taken in 1996,known as the Hubble Space Telescope,it found tens of thousands of Galaxies in a single area in the sky.
The furthest we can see into space is 6 billion light years.
Lol yeah sure, our Earth, a speck of insignificant dust compared to the Universe being the center.
There are innumerable Universes out there as well.
We are an insignificant speck in god's great creation, how are we the primary living beings in the Universe?
Well our intelligence has broadened as scientists put it,but there is still a mystery, there are many mysteries about human civilization before 5,000 years ago.For example ancient East Indian tribes,Middle Eastern and Egyption and Chinese civilizations has vast knowledge,so vast that scientists cannot understand how they were capable of it.
For example there is an ancient Chinese text called the I Ching, its 5,000 years old,and it is mainly a book of fortune, its more like a roll dice game, with 6 different options, but a man before the year 2,000 analyzed the data from the I Ching and plotted it on a graph,it seemed like a bar graph, there are 60 possibilities, and 6 options, and each time,by intervels of 500 years starting from 3,000 BC,the I Ching options would line up with the major events in history, and it ends at 2012.
The History Channel explained it better lol.
Similarly, the Egyptions were able to align the Great Pyramid perfect with percison accuracy to the North East.
The ancient East Indian civilization had vast astronomical knowledge, their holy number is 108,108 multiplied by the sun's radius is the distance from the Sun to Earth in miles,108 times the Moon's radius is Earth's distance from the Moon in miles. The Indus Valley civilization was also able to calculate the diameter of the Solar System, and if you convert the units, its about 6 billion miles, but they could only see to Uranus, the actual diameter is about 8 billion miles.
They were able to say that the Earth was over 6 billion years old in the ancient Vedic scriptures,in the bible it said 6,000.
The Mayans came a little later on,but they are credited with having vast knowledge, their calander aligns with major events that happen in histor, and it becomes major in 2012 and ends.
How about the similarity between the ancient Mayans, and ancient East Indians, those two civilizations are exactly aligned if you dig into the Earth.Thats just amazing, and most of this was when European civilization was getting comfy wearing clothes.
Basically we are aware that the Universe is vast, but we also tend to make fun of our ancestors due to their false beliefs, but most of the false beliefs came in the dark ages, from 1-1000 AD.Thats when European civilization came on the rise, and conquest and such began.
