A very close friend of mine is going through a terrible time. His sister's heart stopped and due to the fact she lacked oxygen for so long, she became brain dead. Tonight, the life support gets turned off and he wants to get together with us (his close friends) while this is happening as he can't bring himself to go see it being done.

I have shown him my sorrow and that I am there for him, but I am really at a loss of what to say. This is the second person near to us that we have lost in a very short time, but I still don't know what to say to the deceased loved ones.

Please help, any ideas will be really appreciated.

The same thing happened to my younger Brother but after the life support was turned off he still lived for about a week.
If the Person beleived in GOD then it would be ok to say that she is in a better place with some of her loved ones that had passed away. Just your presence of being there will help comfort all those involved.

He just doesn't want to be alone when it happens. Being there will mean so much. You don't really have to say anything. A hug or a touch of some kind would mean a lot also. It has to be a very devastating time for anyone.

how terrible for your friend... I'm so sorry.

Being there for him is the best thing. Guys don't always express their emotions like women do and want to talk things out.

Just keep reminding him that bodies die but love never does.

If he is a spiritual person, remind him that she's in heaven now. It might be a bit too soon, but you could ask him about her and what her idea of heaven is, and what he pictures her doing in heaven.

Say that you love him, that you are here for him if he ever wants to talk, hold his hand, hug him, etc. His loved one is NOT "in a better place". It is NOT that "God needed her more than we did". etc. None of those platitudes mean anything and they are actually hurtful. Just stick by his side, let him cry, let him tell stories about her, you tell your favorite memory of her that few people know (if you have one). Just be there. good luck!!

some times your presence there says more then any words that you can muster. the best thing is say anything that comes from the heart apart from that you dont have to practise anything.

You dont have to say a word your prescence will be enough to show you care. Sometimes we can't find the right words to say to our friends and love one.

Nothing elaborate. Just tell him how very sorry you are for his loss. Let him talk if he wants. Just be there.
