PS3 games are region free, besides UK and Australia are PAL regions, so you'll be able to play region locked PS1/2 games.

your PS 3 will work, the only difference is the games that are made. Different countries have different games. Look at the games people play in Japan, and look at the ones played in say the US. Its as different as day and night. But the console is no different. You might have to change the processing chip. And that doesn't cost that much.
