Painful swallowing (odynophagia) merits a visit to an ENT (ear, nose and throat doctor), and SOON.
When you call for the appointment, tell the receptionist you have painful swallowing in the absence of trauma or infection. She should be able to get you in more quickly this way.
You are at risk for throat cancer due to the smoking and exposure to toxic fumes.

By all means, go see a doctor and ask for a referral to an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat) specialist. I can understand why you would be worried, but worrying about it isn't getting anything done about it.

Maybe Adam is eating your apple.

Thyroid cartilage pain is probably like an infection like a sore throat.
