we're moving in together this weekend...his cat likes to sleep on couch next to him. mine curls at foot of bed. i've had my cat for a long time, and i can't bear to kick the little furball to the floor every night. i think he should give a little. what's the big deal if the cat sleeps at the very corner of the bed? ugh!!

my dog sleeps in bed with me, and any man who dates me has to be the type of guy who accepts the fact that I spoil my pets.

this is something I'm upfront with, and they come into the relationship knowing full well so that if in the end they tell me "Its me or the dog" they know in that ultimatum, its always going to be the dog.

This is something that may seem minor, but can put a strain on your relationship.

So talk to him about how you feel about it.

Ask him how he'd feel if you tell him you don't want his cat on the couch or any furniture if he won't let your cat sleep with you at the foot of the bed.

Make sure you talk about comprimises like "He won't be allowed to come in on 'romantic' moments."

but if you move in with him now before clearing this up, without coming to a compromise you can both agree with,

you could strain the relationship. the first year of marriage is always the hardest, so don't go into it with extra unneeded stress.

I agree with you. What's the big deal indeed. Has he never provided you with any reason? He's obviously not allergic. So - it's your cat, and you own 50% of the bed. The cat sleeps on your 50% of the bed. His cat likes to curl up beside him on the couch? Well then, let him sleep on the couch - with his cat by his side (instead of you).

Within a week, he will have not only given in, but totally forgotten about the whole thing.

keep the cat and the guy. neither one is worth giving up the other. if he is mad about the cat then you can get a cat bed for the kitty and make sure it is a nice and warm and soft one. you could have it near the bed but not where you could end up stepping on it. if kitty doesn't like the new bed, try sleeping somewhere else for a few nights to see if it is the bed or you, if it is the bed, try making some other place like it. if it is you, then you have one loving kitty and that is a blessing that anyone should achknowledge

If he knew the cat slept on the bed before he married you then it wasn't that big of an issue. Your kitty will be there when he is traveling on the road or when you might be home sick. My cat has his own twin size mattress complete with sheets and comforter and topped with a fleece blanket folded just the way he likes it.
The cat stays.

I really hope you wont let your husband have his way! What he is doing is really stupid, you shoudl ask him what the big deal is if the cat sleeps at the end of the bed? Its not like its in his face or anything!

And like Howard had said (above me) the cat was there first!! If he still doesnt agree with you, then if I were you I would sleep in a seperate room.

The cat has a routine by now and it's very hard to change a cat's routine.
Talk to your husband and tell him how you feel about it.
The cat shouldn't be thrown out of the room just because you're living with another person now.
He should think about how the cats feel..being thrown into a new place with a new cat to get used to.

Just sort it out before you move in

One of our cats sleeps at the foot of our bed. No real problems most of the time. If my toes get out from under the blankets then I'm awakened by my toes being eaten or licked. The cat is seven years old so its not going to grow out of that.

With an ex-girlfriend her cats were annoying. I never wanted them sleeping in our bed. The one used to sit on the dresser and watch us have sex - not my cup of tea

From your description it looks like you want your cat in bed while his cat sleeps on the couch. I think both cats should be out of the bed. The bed is for humans, not pets. If your boyfriend is a light sleeper, a cat in the bed may wake him up. Our cat sleeps on the first floor and comes upstairs only if she wants to signal to us for something. She's never shown even the slightest desire to be in our bedroom. It's entirely possible and humane not to let the cat near where you sleep.

Here's what you do before you actually move in together....
Tell him that your cat sleeps on the end of the bed with you..........If he says no ~ tell him that your moving in with him obviously isn't going to happen.
End of story !!
