How can I make a difference locally? I need to stop sitting on my butt all day on my days off.. Any tips, even small ones, would be appreciated.

Contact your local Salvation Army office if you have one or do volunteer work at the hospital or something.

To do community service, it is better to be in a group or organization. With a group, mutual support of any form will always be there to assist each member when needed. Here are some suggestions you can consider:
1. Depending on what kind of work you want to get involved in, whether religious or civic, start with becoming a member of any of these groups.
2. If they have committees, surely they have some kind of community services committee, or anything of this sort. You can be active in this committee
3. Know how far have they gone with their projects and what they are into at present. Ask and familiarize yourself with what they are doing, and inquire where they want you to be of help. Presto!!! Then you are in it.....

A piece of advice: In any group activity, the most important element that you have to consider is good relationship with the other members of the group. The whole group moves as one, without anybody advancing or dragging behind.

What causes are you interested in ? What activities do you want to do? Have a look at VolunteerMatch.org and look through the volunteering opportunities available there. If there is anything listed in your area that you feel you are qualified to do and that you find interesting, apply. Once you have figured out what you want to do, contact nonprofit organizations in your area (the phone book, Google or your local United Way can help) and ask them if they have volunteering opportunities. Remember that looking for volunteering opportunities is like looking for a job, in that it will take several inquiries and even interviews before you find the right one for you.

The United Way supports a host of charitable and non profit organizations. You can call their 211 number and get a list of these organizations and volunteer opportunities. Then you can call or visit them.

I don't know how old you are, but maybe you could become a leader for a 4-H club. Then you could help kids do various projects. 4-H kids can do forestry, acting, engineering, animal showing, and a hundred other things.
