your budget is limited forget the bimmer it is a has been car from a has been maker[who merely trades on it's name and palms off quirky flawed electronics and crappy 300 dollar cup holders as their gold standard] it is pushing 20 yrs old and they all leak oil [no actual redeeming values here]
the volvo 850 has proven itself over and over [and no leaks]
the parts are reasonable by comparison and with company's like ipd usa they become FUN to drive. service labor times are reasonable from both an owner and a mechanic's stand point.
one last note; by now the bimmer has most likely been through several owners. [each caring less than the previous].
it is very common to find a 12-15 year old volvo still with the original owner who has kept up ALL the services.
while mercedes [as suggested above] have solid mechanicals their engines leak just as bad or worse than bmw's especialy the 6 cyl models [all years from 1987 up. single and double overhead cam gas engines ]

The BMW is really great to drive, but the electronics may end up giving you headaches.

Volvo - Turbo servicing costs?? A terribly boring drive

There must be other options to consider: If fuel costs are not a major issue for you - look at 6 cylinder Mercs - even 80's models - phenominally tough engines and solid build.

Have you looked at Autotrader??

Go to car auctions too - you much touch and see and smell the cars. Difficult to assess vehicles from newspaper.

I'd go the Volvo! People may laugh, but take it from a proud owner of 3 Volvo's, they are the best you can buy! They are very reliable, have very few problems and they are built like a brick...lol..and they usually have had only 1 owner....as for BMW's, they are a nice looking car, I don't know allot about them, but I do know the later models have a number of electrical problems.

my relatives owns 2 volvos (my mom was once a broker). we've a ninety six 840R (they r is for rapid), and a ninety 4 940. The 940 has 190000 miles on it and it runs nicely for a motor vehicle that old. in spite of the undeniable fact that it has some problems that shall we restoration for about fifty funds if we wern't making plans on removing it. the wagon is like new. in spite of the undeniable fact that it in basic terms has 20k on it. surely volvos are incredibly good autos. and that they are safer than tanks. if u get the electrical powered fastened(which if each and every little thing has to get replaced ought to value u much) and get the emissions to a suitable point (which could additionally value alot) u could have an exceptionally solid motor vehicle. My advice to you, is rather of having the wagon as a results of fact its a deal now at 500, yet then putting in doubtlessly hundreds of greenbacks into it, you will desire to easily get a volvo with much less subject concerns. heavily, i does not get this motor vehicle. it may in simple terms be a economic black hollow.

95 Volvo 850 turbo wagons SCREWED !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont know why but every 95 turbo wagon I've driven always seemed to have more BALLS than any of the other years.

15 years at this dealership says it all. the 95s are VERY comfortable and sporty at the same time. No major mechanical failures, engines that last forever, need I say more!!
