Don't walk their dogs?

It is plain ignorance and laziness. They think "oh, my dog has a nice big yard, he's wagging his tail, he looks happy, everything's fine."

Here's a scenario. You live in a gigantic mansion. There is a supply of food and water coming straight to your house, so you don't need to go out to eat or do the groceries. You also have enough toothpaste, shampoo and other basic essentials to last you a lifetime.

Would that mean you wouldn't need to go out? No. You'd still need to go out - to see your friends, to observe the world, to meet new people and experience new things. Because seeing the same thing day in and day out is just boring. It's enough for you to survive. But it's boring. And it's mentally unhealthy.

Same thing with dogs. Going out is not just for physical stimulation but for mental stimulation as well.

I have a big back yard and NO TIME ON MY HANDS. I drive 100 miles round trip to college 4 days a week. When i get home, all I am doing is studying.
If I had the time to walk my dogs I would. I realize that they need the walking and they enjoy getting out. Please don't be so hard on another person, you do not know their whole story and you have not walked a mile in their shoes.
The only other thing that I would add is that if a person has their dog in a big back yard, then the dog has complete freedom of movement

Well having a big back yard does not mean the dog will get enough exercise. My dog is in the backyard during the day and she lazes around and does nothing... and she is an australian cattle dog!!!! Of course you can play with your dog in the back yard but nothing replaces daily walks. Gives your dog a chance to sniff and see different things. Imagine how boring it would be to be in a backyard where nothing happens all day. And the time is not an excuse. If you have no time to walk a dog then you shouldn't get a dog. I have a 100km roundtrip to work every day and come rain or shine or in the dark, I do find the time to walk my dog.

Personally, I think that the whole " the back yard is plenty of exercise, they have more than enough room to run around." thing is an excuse people tell themselves so that they can feel better about being too lazy to take their dogs for a half hour-forty five minute walk every day.

It doesn't matter whether someone's yard is 20 square feet or 200 acres, dogs still need to be walked for their own benefit. It stimulates them mentally and physically. If more people walked their dogs, there would be a whole lot less frustration/boredom related behavioral problems, like destructive chewing.

Anyway, that is my two cents.

Happy Halloween!

I have a back yard my dog gets exercise in. I do not walk them every day, but every other. I also take them hiking with me off leash a couple times a week or swimming or just running around a large field. Also, my dogs go everywhere with me, but the grocery store. The go out to restaurants with me, shopping for clothes, exploring different towns here in Germany. I will miss not being able to take them to a lot of public places when I get back to the States. Also, even in the house or yard they play with each other. I am sure that is stimulating for them, too.
I do not feel guilty at all. I have happy dogs. But, for those who never walk their dog or take it places I do not think that is healthy.

Well, I must say, I have a big back yard, front yard too and I don't walk my dog because I am afraid of the other dogs in the neighborhood (long story)
So....I take my Jasmine to dog parks to walk and run and play so that she has a switch in her routine. ALSO, we take her to the vet just for nothing so that she sees it as a friendly place rather than just for shots.

She gets to go to the bank for treats and she has been so many times that when she goes to the drive thru pharmacy, she expects a treat! LOL

If you have a big yard, and a dog,it still is a good idea to take the dog out somewhere so he can have a good run. It's also good to have him socialize with other dogs. A lot of people don't realize a dog is as much as a responcibility as a child, and they have needs too, they arent toys .

It's the lazy way of saying "my dog gets exercise". It's great to have a big backyard....but the exercise running in a yard is different than walking at a pace. However...I don't' think it's necessarily required to walk a dog for exercise if they are exercising in a large backyard. The good thing about walking your dog not only gives you and your dog good exercise, it gives you the opportunity to train and spend quality time with your dog.

It is very sad. I do dog rescue and I can not tell you how many poor things I have seen that were just thrown out in the backyard. Never played with, walked, excersised, don't know what a ball is or a toy. Some didn't even know what a bed was. They'd lay down on the floor right next to it. Very distressing to me.

Big back yards are good for dogs and other animals to run and play in safely. It's a plus. It's good for them to roam around outside if they want to when they aren't going for walks.
