If it's against the law to chat on a cell phone while driving, then don't you think that POLICE OFFICERS shouldn't be doing it while IN THE PATROL CAR and ON DUTY?

I thought the first rule of law enforcement was to "lead by example."

In New Jersey, which is where I am, it IS against the law to talk on a cell phone while driving unless you're using "hands-free+ technology such as a headset or Bluetooth earpiece, etc.

And, yes, nimrod, it IS illegal to "carry a gun in your car," but only for people that it is illegal to carry a gun AT ALL. If you have a license to carry a gun, you CAN carry it in your car.

My opinion is that the police are the enforcers of law and policy, and therefore should first do so by following those laws and policies, which means, in my humble opinion, that police officers should be using the mandated "hands-free" technology while driving, thus promoting law-abiding and safe driving practices.

I agree with you. I don't think police should be above the law. They're not special citizens. If there's a law that says citizens can't chat on their own cellphones that they bought with their hard earned money, then cops can't chat on their phones either while driving.
And they certainly shouldn't be chatting on any handheld equipment paid for by taxpayers. Ironic isn't it, citizens being told they can't use their own property but cops can use equipment citizens paid for.

First of all, how do you know they were on duty? Just being in a patrol car does not mean they're on duty. Second, is talking on a cell phone illegal in your state? It's not illegal in all states. Second, police have to communicate with lots of people very often, not always available on radio, the cell phone is needed. Not all traffic laws apply to police, like for instance talking on a cell phone and wearing a seatbelt.

As I under stood it they were wanting to outlaw the younger less experienced drivers from being distracted with their cell phones.
Everyone needs to stop, putting on make up, drinking hot coffee, tuning the radio yada yada yada, a police officer is generally a better trained driver and is more able to safely multi-task.
When the law is passed that hand held cell phones are zero tolerance by any one officers will use blue tooth or speaker like the rest of us already do...

Agree totally! I wish they would make that a law here in Indiana. I have had three people this year almost hit me or cause an accident because they were on their cell phone. It really P's me off! I want to get out and beat them with their phone.
