Oh, this has to be the most thought provoking question ever posed in the history of Yahoo Answers.
In case you wonder, I absolutely believe in god and don't think we all came from cosmic dust and now have: Corporations, Animals, Clothes, Streets, Electricity, Artificial Hearts, Automobiles, Money, Wills, etc.

not a thought provoking question at all- just common sense- Adam and Eve did not have last names- the succeeding generations did not have last names but were known by their given name and "son of" whoever was their father. Throughout history last names have developed and evolved from where the person came from, landmarks, or what their profession/ line of work was - as the names moved back and forth aross cultures and languages they evolved into the many strange and unique names we come across today

Last names only came into common use in the middle ages.
Last names identified where people lived or their trade.
But we are made up from cosmic dust, like the bible says.

Not a serious question to think over much. When a population enlarges and we separate from each other theres bound to be different names taken on in humanity. This question is really like asking , " out of all the animals in the world, why do they look so different?" think about that!.

because there are billions of people in the world fo different races.. we did all come from adam and eve, but that doesnt mean all our last names have to be "Jones" or "Suarez" or "Chen"

because thier children went out and started tribes, and it blossomed from there.. people had to have a way to identify themselves via tribe or position with in a tribe.... thus last names evolved. or should I say were CREATED.
