if ur having a well-lit background and ur cat is dark, try using a higher iso.it wld make ur cat outstand coz its black.

If there is light shining towards the cat, lower the iso.and try adjusting the aperture so that the background luks a bit blurry to make ur cat stands out in the picture.
Dats all i cld help.coz im an amature photograper and still learning on my SLR too. =)

Your camera's meter wants everything to be 18% grey, including your black cat. So if the cat is filling most of your frame, the camera will try to lighten kitty to grey. If you don't have an incident meter, use your +/- exposure compensation and minus a bit of exposure if kitty is too light, or plus if it is too dark. Experiment with location and exposure until you get what you want. If you can, use available light. Put kitty near a window, and shoot so the illumination comes from the side, or with your back to the light. Don't be afraid to use higher ISO to get your image sharp, or use a tripod. (BTW, cats CAN be hurt by falls, especially an older one, so throwing or dropping kitty is a dumb and potentially harmful idea, which I'm sure you knew.)

Is the cat to be photographed a Panther?.Or is it a Jaguar?.Is it caged or in the wild?.Has it had a meal in the last week?.Does it stare at you?.Is it a photogenic cat?.Does it react to white back grounds?.What is it like under flashing lights?.If you stared into its eyes would it make you blind?.All of these points are relevant as it may attack you during its photo shoot. So take care .and make sure you get it in focus.1 more point is its claws sharp?.
