If you are talking about the Orthodox Church then I suppose you have to go through a bunch of hoops and ladders, or maybe not so many. I was raised in the Greek Orthodox Church, but as far as the Bible is concerned there is only one Church and that is the Body of Christ.
You become part of the Body of Christ by applying Romans
10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
that's it. It's the Blood of Jesus that saves and nothing else.

By baptism and chrismation, by chrismation, or by confession of faith, according to the judgment of the local bishop and via his choice to exercise akrevia or ekonomia. It must be noted that the majority of the councils and cathedra cited on this web site are NOT ecumenical in nature but are purely LOCAL councils and cathedra, with no canonical status over other hierarchs. Thus, to demand that their decisions must be accepted by all Orthodox is actually to violate the fundamental ecclesiology of Orthodoxy.

the bible says that believing in Jesus is the only requirement to belong to the church. If someone is telling you that you have to DO thing to belong, stay away from them and their "church"
