To the monopoly guy - In general gift cards are like saying hey "I kind of thought of you" and "I think you like to shop here"
Now for the Visa card Im not quite sure what that says, but I know for a fact that AMEX has a fee, Discover has a fee for shipping(like 3 dollars), so I would assume that Visa has something similar but I dont know for sure how much their fee it.

Yes. They'll charge you a fee up front when purchasing. Look at the terms on the card, but I bet it will be around $5.

Gift cards are a rip-off and I wish people would stop buying them.

Take out a dollar bill and look at it. Do you see anywhere on the bill that it has an expiration date? How about that it can only be spent in certain places? Any fees to buy it or use it? Inactivity fees?

I never understood why people voluntarily convert cash that's good anywhere, anytime, for anything, into some thing that is restricted as to where you can use it, and that may carry fees and expire.

To tcarw - if it's the thought that counts, then write a thoughtful note on the card that the money is enclosed in.

Cash truly is the best gift certificate.

Probably. It depends on the issuing agency. I would guess it to be around $5 for a $50 card at most places.
