It really depends on witch rifle you have and the load (how many grain of powder) of the bullet you use.

A rifle is a very poweful weapon. The power of a rifle though depends on the caliber or the size of the bore in the barrel. For example, a .22 rimfire caliber rifle will launch a bullet anywhere from 1000-1800 feet per second with anywhere from 100-200 foot pounds of energy when the bullet leaves the barrel of the rifle. Rifle calibers get larger and more powerful as the caliber number increases with the most powerful being the .50 Browning that's used in sniper rifles that can hit a target up to two miles away.

Hi Gina. You are asking a very broad question. At the bottom end of the spectrum you are looking at the .22 rifles which are powerful enough to kill up to deer size animals but are not usually legal to use for hunting big game. At the far end of the spectrum you are looking at what are known as the dangerous game rifles. These are used when hunting Water Buffalo (which are very hard to kill), Rhinos, Elephants, etc. The smaller of these dangerous game rifles are like the .375 Holland & Holland and the .458 Winchester Magnum with the larger one including the behemoth .600 & .700 Nitro Express rifles.
I hope that helped.
Best.

A pellet gun pumped once is a "rifle" in the truest sense of the word, but it typically doesn't have enough energy to penetrate human flesh. A .50 BMG on the other hand packs the same about of energy into a 1/2" of lead as dropping a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood from a height of 2 feet. There are a lot of "rifles" in between; all should be considered deadly weapons and all should be handled as if they were a loaded .50 BMG.

There are too many different types of rifle to
give you a good answer.
The average deer rifle delivers about
2000 Ft. Lb.s of impact energy, (1/2MV^2).
Does that answer your question?

It depends on what caliber the rifle shoots I know most rifles have longer range than handguns.

That question is like asking what color is the box? Nowhere near enough information to answer it. What do you mean by how powerful? feet per second? foot pounds of energy? What it can penetrate/kill? What rifle are you talking about? Some are more powerful than any other single-person weapon, other are less powerful than a pistol. You need to redefine your question to get a real answer.
